Hayama is a character who grows throughout the whole series, in my opinion the one who grows most of all. So knowing the basics will place you nowhere near understanding the real Hayama. He changes and evolves in many ways and ends up being a person far away from how he started. Or maybe it was all inside of him from the beginning and it was only a matter of bringing it to light. But anyway, here are some Hayama tidbits for beginners.
Hayama Akito was born the 12th of October, which makes him a libra. At the beginning of the series, he's 11 years old, just as Sana and the rest of the child cast. He's got auburn hair and eyes and his blood type is B.
Hayama's mother died when giving birth to him, an event that marked young Akito and his family forever and that overshadows their relationships with one another even 11 years after the tragedy. He lives with his father and his bigger sister, Natsumi. His father shows up as an uncaring parent, who overworks and doesn't pay attention to his children. Meanwhile, Natsumi actively mistreats Akito and blames him for her mother's death. Not a happy family at all.
Akito has been called "a demon" during all his short life by his older sister, and thus he has learnt to act like one. He doesn't respect authority and eventually gets control over all the boys in his class and makes them pull pranks all the time, making it impossible for their teacher to do her job. Despite the negativeness of these actions, Akito wouldn't be able to pull it off if he didn't posess loads of charisma and an outstanding intelligence.
His name: the name Akito is formed by two kanjis -- aki meaning autumn and to, which is the kanji for person. His family name, Hayama is made with a couple of kanjis more: ha, which means in this case wing or leaf, and yama which stands for mountain.
Random trivia: his favourite food is sushi and he loves dinosaurs. His best (male) friend is Ooki Tsuyoshi and he doesn't talk respectfully to anyone (even adults), except he truly respects him/her. This is the Hayama you see when starting the series. But there's a long way from there.
