Kyon is one of Suzumiya Haruhi's companions and second founding member in the SOS Brigade. After entering high school and meeting Haruhi, Kyon finds himself increasingly involved in strange out-of-this-world events totally out of his control.

Initially just attempting idle chat with his anti-social classmate, he's suddenly dragged into her world of paranormal obsession. Nothing to worry about too much in normal circumstances, but Haruhi is not your ordinary high school girl. Kyon is quickly surrounded with aliens, espers and time-travellers. All of which were reunited by Haruhi herself -- while being totally unaware of it.

Apparently, Kyon is also at Haruhi's side because she wished him to, despite being the only "normal" human present in the SOS Brigade. He's actually the only person she listens to and Kyon's opinions are the ones Haruhi lets herself be influenced with. Due to this and Haruhi's ability to unconsciously and dangerously alter reality, Kyon's often relied on to keep an eye on Haruhi by his fellow club members, while they just go with the flow and observe.

While very reluctant to the idea at first, Kyon eventually grows accustomed to it and even enjoys his extraordinary experiences with this strange group of people. However, Kyon remains a rather cynical and apathetic student, always complaining about Haruhi's erratic actions and her spoilt behaviour. Even if Haruhi's "liking" for him is obvious.

I think there's no doubt Kyon and Haruhi share a bond, both of them affecting the other one deeply. However, Kyon denies any romantic implication to it, and usually expresses interest in Asahina Mikuru (resident time traveller) instead. Or at least, interest in chivalrously defending her from Haruhi's abuses. He also has an excellent relationship with Nagato Yuki (alien entity), who only opens up to him. And although he constantly expresses dislike towards Koizumi Itsuki (esper), they often cooperate and have a quite amiable (kind of) friendship.

In reality, Kyon's actual name is unknown. His aunt gave him the nickname Kyon, which was later spread by his younger sister (unnamed too). Everyone at school calls him by this name, including his two "normal" friends, Taniguchi and Kunikida.

The one and only sarcastic and witty narrator of the story, Kyon is also ironically the most mysterious presence around Haruhi, since she has expressed numerous times that she is "not interested in ordinary humans". Kyon doesn't seem amused by this kind of irony.
